I know I complain about telemarketers here all the time. Really they're not so much complaints as a way to remember some of the sillier things I encounter at work.

Yesterday I was called 3 times by a window washing company and asked that they take our business number off of the list. Today I was called by them again. The guy was very apologetic and explained that it can take a day to get the number out of the autodialer.

Still, I'm tempted to tell them next time "Thanks, but we don't have any windows. Our entire complex is underground, except for the parking. We have a surface lot and underground living."

I just took a call from an AT&T subcontractor. On a lousy, staticky telephone line. Rule #1 of telephone decisions: do not pay for service from someone who cannot provide a good quality line for their subcontractors.

I just hung up on a telemarketer and then had to laugh. This was the snarkiest telemarketer I've ever spoken to.

Me: "Good afternoon <snip rest of standard greeting>"
Her: "Hi this is Mary, I'm calling about your copier"
Me: "Can you tell me where you're calling from?"
Her: "My desk"
Me: "And can you tell me what company you are from?"
Her: "Uranus" -- pronounced "Your anus"
Me: "Well in that case you're not my copier supplier, so please don't call me again".

This woman's voice was just so smarmy. I know it was a phishing call, but I have to wonder how the company that hired her expects anyone to buy that she's a legitimate supplier when she talks like that.

Ah well. It made me smile.

I just got a phishing telephone call at my office. I'm used to telemarketers (the Do-Not-Call apparently doesn't apply to business numbers) and I know about phishing in email. But this is a new one on me.

Her: "Hi, this is Jill. I'm calling about your copy machine.  I just need to know the model number on the front of it."
Me: "Sure. Can you just tell me what company you're calling from?"
Her: long silence followed by dial tone

If she had said she was from my copier service I'd have been happy to give her the information she wanted!  I wonder where she was calling from and why.
